Fear of Flying Higher – How to Give and Take Critiques

So you’ve reached a plateau in your chosen craft. You want to make better art but you just don’t know where to go from here. One of the BEST resources for improvement available to you is other people, both in your field and outside of it, but.. and my, that is a very large but... NO ONE feels comfortable being told all about how they do things wrong. Professional artists and performers cringe at the thought of reading newspaper reviews – and yet, they’re first in line to buy a copy of the paper as it hits the stands. How do they stand it? This class is set up to help you learn what they already know – how to take information that people give to you, distill from the total that which is going to be useful, and deal with the various issues that can come up in the process of critiquing artwork. It will also give you some tools to use when other people come to you for direction and advice in their own work. The first part of the class will go over various techniques of constructive criticism. During the second part of the class, we will take part in a critique session similar to ones you would find in college art classes. Please bring a piece of work to talk about (finished or in process, with or without documentation). Everyone who wants to join in the discussion session must be prepared to be on both sides of the process. If you have any questions, please contact Cori ahead of time. Bathhouse Saturday 4pm-6pm
