Calligraphy 101: The Basics This class shows you everything you will need to know to get started in calligraphy, from what tools you will need to actually learning how to form a calligraphed letter.  Limit 15. Bathhouse Sat 9am - 10am

Calligraphy 102: So You Want To Calligraph a Scroll? Do you know calligraphy, and want to put it to good use?  This class can help you do that.  This class is designed to show you what you need to know to put words on any illuminated piece. Limit 15. Bathhouse Sat Noon - 1pm

Children’s Cooking Classes We will again be offering the children of the Kingdom a chance to cook for and serve Their Royal Majesties on Saturday. Their Majesties have requested this activity and we are pleased to be able to provide it.  Children are to gather at our camper near troll at 10:00 Saturday morning. We will prep and cook the meal to be taken to the field with a practice service to troll  first. There will be visiting Royalty present also and Their Majesties wish is to have the children serve Them, the marshals and others such as MOLs who are not able to easily leave their post to get lunch. Princess Royale Elisabeth will be leading the activity for the children.  Compliance with SCA policies will be followed for the activity, as last year.  Any child who is helping, will also get to eat if they wish. I would ask parents to consider the activity and dress the children in appropriate clothing for food prep. We will have some aprons there and so on, but I do not want an upset parent should the child spill something on good garb!  Private Camp (look for Camper near Troll) Sat 10am - 1pm

Constructing a Man's Viking Cap How-to class on constructing a simple men's Viking cap based on examples found in Birka. We will also be using needles appropriate for the time period to construct the cap. Supplies for first 10, auditors welcome. AS2 Fri 2pm - 3:15pm

Double Reed Musical Instruments - Loud & Soft Have you ever wondered about period woodwinds other than then recorders? Double Reed instruments come in several flavors, Loud or Soft, windcapped or open reeds. What is better, a natural or synthetic reed? Learn a little about the care and feeding of the crumhorn, cornamuse, Kortholt, Shawm and Rauschpiefe.  AS1 Sat 3pm - 4pm

End the Dread of Writing Documentation Confused about writing documentation? Documentation doesn't have to be scary! We'll discuss the proper ways to chronicle your project and look at examples.  Handouts for 10 people.  AS3 Fri 5pm - 6pm

European Blockprinted Textiles Is that brocade fabric too pricey?  Can't find the pattern you want?  Learn how to block print fabric for use in clothing, wall hangings, and other decorative uses based on the instructions found in Il libro dell'arte by Cennino Cennini written in the early 15th century. Class will include a demonstration of printing with a small escarbuncle block.  Students can bring a non-white piece of fabric or item (at least 4x4") to be printed. AS3 Fri 4pm - 5pm

Fancy Garb: Simple Late Period Garb Decorations This is a lecture/discussion on simple embellishments for dressing up later period garb.  It is geared toward beginning sewers who would like to both look more period and more decorative. Bathhouse Fri 3pm - 4pm

Horse Furniture (Tack) from the Bayeux Tapestry This class will focus on the type of horse equipment that was used in the 11th and 12th centuries.  The Bayeux Tapestry, which provides a wealth of information on life and culture during the time of the Norman Conquest, also reveals a great deal about the type of equipment used on horses in the period.  This class will concentrate on this source, but also discuss other evidence from sources of the period.  This class is especially helpful to those looking to recreate a period "kit" for equestrian activities, but is also of interest to the scholar.AS2 Sat 10am - 11am

Painting Gems and Jewels Learn how to recreate the look of the gems and jewels found in many of the late period Italian Illuminations. This is a hands-on method class. Please bring your favorite small round paint brush. Handout and other materials will be supplied. Limit 8.  Bathhouse Sat 10am - 11am

Paternosters, Rosaries, and Payres of Bedes Learn to flout sumptuary laws with the utmost piety.  This is a hands-on class; students will make their choice of one of the many common styles of beads common among all ages, genders and classes in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Materials fee $3-$6, depending on your choice of style and materials. Limit 12, auditors welcome.  Minimum age 10.  AS3 Sat Noon - 2pm

Quill Pen Making with a Discussion on Inks This class will teach a method of creating feather pens from goose and turkey feathers. Tools, preparation and nib cutting will be taught. This class includes a discussion on period ink making.  The student leaves with at least one working quill pen.  Heat treated feathers and a small bottle of ink will be provided for each student.  Knives can be purchased (by adults) after the class.  AS3 Sat 9am - 11am

Atlatl Practicum Never heard of an atlatl?  Or you have heard of them, and always wanted to try your hand at throwing one?  This is your chance.  This class will show you how to start to throw, and improve your throwing of an atlatl.  Field (look for people with giant arrows) Sat 2pm - 5pm

Creating and Maintaining a Household How to create, organize and maintain a SCAdian household, taught by Sir Ogami, who created and has been in charge of the largest Japanese household in the SCA for over 20 years. AS1 Sat 4pm - 5pm

Equestrian Activities: A Guide for the Spectator & New Participant This introductory level class will discuss types of equestrian activities practiced in the SCA.  As such it is an aid to those watching the activities, enhancing their appreciation of equestrian events through an understanding of the purpose of the "games," historical background, and "scoring" for competition purposes.  This class is also of benefit to those persons seeking to get involved in this exciting area of the SCA experience.   AS1 Sat 1pm - 2pm

Equestrian Events for Autocrats and Event Organizers This class is specifically tailored towards those persons interested in adding equestrian activities to their event. Equestrian activities add pageantry and interest to any event, but require additional procedures with Corporate and marshallate staff.  This class will explain these requirements and make the process easy to understand for event organizers and Autocrats.  AS3 Fri 3pm - 4pm

Event Finances: Before, During, and After A look at how to plan the finances of an event, how to handle money during the event, and how to do an event report. Spear Class Track

His Majesty has asked that we, the chivalry of this Kingdom, do what we can to support the efforts towards enhancing the knowledge of war and its practices.  Thus, I am offering Spear Classes for those interested. There will be three classes, one per day. We will meet at the MOL Tent on the Battlefield.

- Fri 7pm - 8pm: Basic. (OUT OF ARMOR). For beginners and those that would like to shake off the rust.

- Sat 10am - 11am: Intermediate. For those who feel that they work well, yet still get hit, or cant go on to the next "level".

- Sun 9am - 10am: Advanced. (OUT OF ARMOR. Theoretical class, working with motor skills and advanced mechanics.)

Please bring your own spear, or else a polearm. Barring that, bring yourself and we will do our best to square you away. The AEthelmearc army shall not turn down any who thirst for knowledge in the arts of war.

The Gentle Art of Being a Consort…and Yes There Is an Art To It Learn more about the role of the lady in the tournament. How ladies in period played an integral part in such a male oriented atmosphere ... and how that knowledge and perspective can add to our modern appreciation and enjoyment. The class will include an overview of the development and evolution of the tournament, known facts about the ladies' role in period, the consort in SCA context and a roundtable discussion. All levels of experience and interest are welcome. Arrived too late to make the start of the class? - Please join us even if the class is in progress. $1 fee for handout.  Bathhouse Fri 6pm - 8pm
